Starting the round as the top two, the only two
remaining one-hundred-percent sides, St Helens and Hull KR had a round four
date at the Totally Wicked Stadium with the honour of ending the weekend at the
top of the pile, the prize on offer.
St Helens were slight favourites for the win with the
bookies, handicapped six points on the coupon, but the Robins were happy to be
given the underdogs tags in a game that they will have prioritised since the
announcement of the fixture lists.
A big blow for the visitors was the loss of their kicker
Rhyse Martin who could be out for up to four months after sustaining a thigh
injury requiring surgery, but they were boosted by the return of talisman Mikey
Lewis.
A very bright start from Hull KR saw them taking the game to
their hosts in the early exchanges, Saints starting to look rattled and making
errors as they tried to clear their lines.
On ten minutes the Robins hit the front when a high kick was
knocked on by Kyle Feldt, the loose ball picked up by the returning Mikey Lewis
to ground. Lewis hit the near post with his conversion attempt but a deserved
early lead for the visitors.
Towards the half hour Saints were easing themselves back
into the game and as the clock kicked over to thirty Curtis Sironen collected a
Jack Welsby kick to stumble over the line from ten metres out for the levelling
try. Mark Percival added the conversion to edge his side into a two-point lead.
KR were back in front with three minutes of the half
remaining, Tom Davies flying through the air, after a ten-metre run down the
right wing, to score acrobatically in the corner. Lewis
added the touchline conversion for a 10-6 lead to the visitors at the break.
KR extended their lead when Joe Burgess jumped to claim a Lewis
high kick and as he fell to the ground in the goal area, he offloaded into the
hands of Oliver Gildart who simply had to dot down.
Two minutes later Burgess broke down the left wing and found
Gildart supporting in plenty of space to go in for his second of the night.
Lewis found the target this time, Saints now needing three converted tries. KR
were good value for their lead and outplaying the home side, their supporters
now silenced.
Saints are never going to give up and on sixty-five Welsby took
the pass and avoided three tacklers to force the ball to ground with a twenty-metre
arcing run. Percival was wide with the conversion attempt, Saints still two
converted tries adrift and running out of time quickly.
Some frantic KR defence managed to maintain their line for a
ten point winning margin.
Hull KR will now finish the round at the top of the pile,
the only side with a four-game winning start to the 2025 season. They have laid
down a marker that they intend to be back at Old Trafford come October with the
intention of going one better than last season and lifting the trophy, and who’d
bet against them on tonight’s showing. Saints a little off the pace tonight
after a blistering start to the season, the next few weeks will show whether they
are real contenders.
